Brakes FAQ for Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM FIAT SRT

What Types of Brake Systems are There?

Two, depending on make and model. One is disc -- brakes comprised of rotors and calipers, with pads attached to the calipers. The other is drum --brakes made up of drums and shoes.

How Do Brakes Work?

When you step on the brake pedal, they generate friction (resistance), which your vehicle uses to slow down and stop. Both systems work a little differently, though. In disc brakes, the rotors clamp to the calipers and pads, while in drum brakes, the shoes fasten to the drums; behind this, the brake pistons go through the bore in the master brake cylinder and pressurize the brake fluid, sending it through hoses and lines.

How Can I Tell When to Replace Brake Parts?

Run an inspection. Look at things like the brake pedal, fluid, lines, hoses, the brake assemblies, and the parking brake. If any of them seems worn or damaged, make the change. Otherwise, do so when you see the signs they're going bad: dashboard warning lights, shuddering, pulling sideways, and grinding sounds when braking, weak brake grip, a soft or low brake pedal, and longer slowdown and stopping times. Use OEM parts for the job, too, not aftermarket.

Why Buy OEM Brakes vs. Aftermarket?

Mopar designs and builds them for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM, FIAT, and SRT vehicles exclusively. They'll fit your ride, they'll work better, and unlike aftermarket brake parts, they won't void your factory warranty and make you responsible for repairs otherwise covered down the road at a Mopar service centre.
